The TP-LINK TL-WN823N 300Mbps Wireless Mini USB Adapter is an awesome add-on for laptops that have older wireless cards or ones that need a wifi boost in range. It brings speeds up to 300 Mbps with Windows and Mac support.

The TP-LINK TL-WN823N 300Mbps Wireless Mini USB Adapter is about the length of two US pennies laid side by side.  However, this means that it does stick out the side of the laptop and is not flush with the USB port. Otherwise the esthetics of the device are clean including the one-touch button that could be hidden unless you know it is there.

The range and signal strength on my Macbook used for testing of the TP-LINK TL-WN823N 300Mbps Wireless Mini USB Adapter was increased significantly when I switched from the internal wifi to the TP-Link adapter. I definitely gained and extra bar in strength and was able to use the Macbook in areas that previously would lose signal.

Most users will never achieve the full 300 Mbps speeds but you have to account for what type of router you have and what you are accessing on the other end. I tested against a dual band 300 Mbps router (see the D-Link Cloud Router 3000 and TP_link router reviews we did) with four 1 Gbps ports that connected to a local SAN.  I got very close to the 300 Mbps speeds.  Far more than the built in one was capable.

The included CD (I hate mini CDs however) made setup easy for power and new users. I wish there was a view for advanced users in the included utility, but after reading user commetns it seems a recent update simplified the UI at the demand of the larger customer base.  A simple LED let's you know when the TL-WN823N is active and goes off when in power standby too.

The "One Button Security Setup" is commonly found now on most devices making a secure connection process quick.  The TL-WN823N provides both WPA/WPA2 security.

Now an added bonus is that this device can act as a soft access point.  So let us say you connect your latop via ethernet cable or your own built-in wifi, you can then set this up to provide Internet access to other devices.  Basically this TP-LINK TL-WN823N becomes an access point through some easy configuration changes in the utility.
