From the Inbox: I think DAOS is screwed up
I have been digging through tons of online articles, presentations and forums and we are just having a hard time getting DAOS back to working order. I think we made some mistakes moving things around, some pruning commands and possibly missing some files. Is it better to start over?

From the Inbox: XSS and DominoValidateRedirect variable to protect your users
We recently had a pen test done on our web servers and it came back with a few issues. One of the issues is that our Domino server was vulnerable to cross-site redirect hacks. Is this an application code problem or the Domino server? We need to fix this to pass the audit.

From the Inbox: Number of Lotus Traveler HTTP Threads
Here is the issue we are facing. We deployed Traveler and it grew quickly. We now see delays and even hangs in HTTP. IBM has said to adjust the HTTP threads and send a ton of links and info. Is there an easy way to figure out the best number?

From the IdoNotes Mailbox: Large File Uploads in Quickr
We have been having issues with our new Quickr environment when trying to upload big presentation files. I have looked at the settings and cannot figure out why large files fail to upload. Any suggestions where to look for how we messed up?
(name withheld)
ANSWER: You ask a great question that many people face with the growing deployment of Lotus Quickr on Domino! Quickr has a few places to investigate when trying upload large files. The first place to begin is the notes.ini file. A strange place to start, I know. You need to establish whether two variables are present and set correctly. Also, make sure they do not exist higher in the notes.ini with lower values.
The two variables:
· QuickPlaceLargeFileRequestOnFile=1
·QuickPlaceLargeRequestDirectory=[exactly where you want the working directory]
The second variable must be writable and accessible all the time for this to work. Usually, picking a large temp area outside of where you might place transaction logs and the operating system is a good choice.
Next, you must set the maximum attachment size in both Quickr and Domino. If one is lower than the other, the lower one is obeyed. Quickr is in the Site Administration → Other Options via the Web interface. Domino is in the server document on the Internet Protocols-HTTP tab. The Maximum Size of Requested Content must be established to meet your needs. One last location is the Maximum Post data size limit on the Domino Web Engine tab.
I would suggest making all of these the same size limits to ease administration and troubleshooting at later times.

From The IdoNotes Mailbox - Business Card Photos In The Domino Directory
We are investigating placing photos of employees in the Domino Directory for use in Sametime business cards and maybe in Lotus Connections later. Is this a good idea and is it easy to do?

Are You Ready For Sametime 8.5
The first thing to remember is that the core presence and chat services as we know them will still run on Domino and operate as before. You can even run meetings the exact way you do now, just under the name Sametime Classic. You maintain the same functions, with little change.
The big change is in the meeting services, which will require an increase in the number of servers you need to support the new features. The meeting server will include:
· WebSphere Application Server
· DB2
· A LDAP server (which might exist in your environment now)
Then there are optional components you may want to run that require more hardware, including:
· Media Server, for audio and video services
· Proxy Server, for a new web chat client
Even more hardware that runs WebSphere and DB2 will be needed.
In essence, this does not include clustering, scaling or anything else for you to take advantage of the new Sametime 8.5 services. I suggest informing yourself on deployment, architecture and capacity planning as you plan the migration. Use online resources, or speak with someone knowledgeable and involved in Sametime 8.5.

My Top 5 geek gift picks for Christmas 2010
- Flip cameras - they were still a bit in the infancy before and a few geeks had them. Now they are becoming mainstream and every kid, grandparent and parent that wants to capture every moment should get their hands on one. With the point and click recording and easy sharing, why not have one. For those at conferences, how better to get the blackmail material you so desire? Sony, Kodak and more are getting into the game letting you know it is an emerging market. The leader is still Flip Video in my eyes with a ton of models
- Ebook readers - now this is something I have personally owned for like 10 years and still use constantly. The same device even. I started with the RCA Ebook, which used to have it's own store and more. But it was way ahead of the time and delivery is via sync, still like many of today. Sony and some others are coming on full steam with readers and agreements with online bookstores, like the Barnes & Noble or the world. I can't see why we pay full printing costs (meaning reduce the price to eliminate what is paid to the paper supply instead of inflating your profits more) and it would only increase sales in my opinion. The leader is still the Kindle for the wireless buying power and scheduled daily delivery, but look for more offering this soon enough. If you are an avid reader, the eInk technology is amazing and you get used to the 1 second delay or so as you turn pages rather quickly.
- Plantronics Calisto Pro headset - holy crap. This thing rocks from firsthand knowledge. One bluetooth enabled set to handle VoIP, landline and cellular phones, all at once. There is a handset and headset (earpiece). Have a call on your cell, click to answer, a call comes in over Skype while on the phone, just click over. All integrated at one time. Try that with your current bluetooth. It uses DECT 6 so there is no competition or interference with wifi in the house like many 2.5 Ghz systems too. I love this thing!!!
- Pokens and more Pokens - yes I have spoken about them and the impact they can have. They seem to be the current leader in the space, with some other upcoming contenders, like HelloMyNameIsE. This takes business cards and social interaction to a new level at events when people have these. Instead of trading a card with limited space and no living information, you exchange information that can then be tagged, receive updates, show multiple addresses, emails, phone numbers and social networks that the person can be found on. I create a tag for each conference and assign it to everyone I meet there. Searching for contacts then goes beyond trying to remember or searching alphabetically. I can then see their recent updates on networks and a sliding timeline, with picture (if they include this option). It is a one time purchase that can have multiple business cards created. So for one event you are your company, another you are your social interaction information. Heck, want to keep up with the family? Grab a bunch of these, create a "private" card with home information and take them to the family reunion. If you do not want the fun little characters, there is a business Poken Pulse and custom ones that can be done as giveaways.
- Motorola Droid - you know it had to be in there. This is the newest gadget for the geek to show off to his friends. While you need to consider where they have their phone plans already (as in don't get it if they are not on the right network or changing soon) this is one heck of a geeky gift. Even accessories are being made by tons of vendors. Applications are coming out of the woodwork and even some iPhone developers said they are tired of the AppStore and are heading to Droid. It is a big blow to those that don't want to be locked down and the geek will love you for this.

E-Pro: Sys Admin Newsletter Feb 2005
I know you are about tired of hearing all of the Lotusphere banter and hype all over the press. But, as luck would have it I will not fill your head with too much of it. Libby has done a fine job on the Lotus Informer of keeping you up to date and providing links to all the blogs. So peek in on my strange overview of the week's events.
From there I jump into some Sametime issues that are all too common across your installations and into a former customer's directory dilemma. When I refer to dilemma, he has over 40 directories he is trying to get a handle on. My last stop for this fast train ride of a newsletter is from another reader and Lotusphere attendee on DMZ security and a directory question all in one.

As a frequent traveler, this annual trek to Lotusphere seems to scream to me: patience, relaxation, and wonderful weather. After nine years, I also figure that I would finally get that one (or all) of those things will not happen.
Patience: More like patients. Tons of them from stress, running from session to session. With the new 60-minute format, there was an excellent mix of sessions and topics for every person with any desire. But the rush to sneak in lunch around the lunchtime session, the breakfast around the 7 a.m. Birds of a Feather, and then a dinner or event around the evening training for certification leaves most of the newer attendees as patients. I saw red eyes, stuttering, and even a glazed look that Krispy Kremes would be proud of.
