IBM is increasing it's ability to release updates by open sourcing numerous parts of the code and then rolling them into Update Packs (UP) that are then deployed as shown in the picture below.

Much of this is taken from OpenNTF.  This allowed IBM to have code written, tested and modified at a quicker rate using a form of crowdsourcing. This saves them incredible amounts of money and also release cycle time.

Here is some technical and other information on the release:
  • Customers can access this from Passport Advantage in about a week (Partners from Partnerworld)
  • The Notes client, Domino Designer, Domino & XWork Server are receiving updates
  • This UP does not modify the core Domino code in any way. It just adds a layer
  • The XPages Extension Library is included in this UP - over 100 new tags.
  • Updated Teamroom and Discussion templates including some mobile controls
  • Domino Access Services contain new REST API's
  • XPagesExt.nsf is included as a sample application
  • All client platforms are supported
  • It is not a plugin but a full UP install (picture InstallShield)
  • Upgradable for future releases of UP's

I did ask about versioning numbers to roll this out to clients via SmartUpgrade but they were not sure yet.  it is not a plug-in that will use a site update push, but more of an actual installer that must be performed.  For the Domino server it just drops new files into the program directory and templates.

I will have more thoughts on the Upgrade Pack (UP), Incremental Feature Release (IFR) and Incremental Fix (IF) naming in a follow-up posting.
