IdoNotes (and sleep)

by Chris Miller at 03:38:29 PM on Friday, March 30th, 2007
While this was announced on the web a couple weeks ago I tried to do some digging to see just how Microsoft plans on implementing a gateway that will take PBX traffic into VOIP to enable Office Communications Server 2007 and Communicator make a stand against the IBM/3rd party integrators.

So far it leaves much to be desired in actual technical information.  While the IBM and 3rd parties have not only marketing content but technical content in how this all works.  Microsoft did align with Nortel to get some known name in the market behind them, but I know we lack the confidence to have a Microsoft piece of hardware sitting between us making calls or not.

To top it off, Microsoft has it's own version of SIP that they are basing this on.  Even Trillian is writing a new plug-in labeled LCS and everyone else is SIP to make note of the differences.  So if they are writing custom code around their own custom SIP, you will be knee deep in MS land with your phone if you take this route.

    Chris,

You do not give a correct reflection of Microsoft capabilities / standards and partnerships in this brief post :

    Some additional input:

    - Partnerships

    - SIP

Due to the fact that you are focussing on OCS2007, which very recently enetered Public Beta; not all the documentation is available yet.

You can expect howveer for more and more IP Telephony vendors to start providing native integration from their PBXs into OCS instead of requiring a gateway.

I honoustly think Microsoft is more in the lead in this space compared to IBM. You'll be surprised how many companies want "to have a Microsoft piece of hardware sitting between us making calls or not"

I would think most companies would want a telephony provider piece of hardware between themselves and the VOIP system.

If we can first navigate around the fact that the 3rd party vendors need some changes to how they handle SIP just to talk to the MS side, then we can wrangle a bit more confidence of interoperability on my end too.

While the tech specs are not totally out yet as you noted, I noted it also in the posting saying that just making the announcement is great, having more info is even better.

Who knows, we might end up hosting this gateway at some time.

    Chris,

Define 'telephony provider' and let's talk again about in let's say a year from now ...

As for the SIP interoperability Microsoft is driving this standard at least just as hard as any other vendor. As I have commented earlier the major players are working together ..

With regards to the documentation, again, this is the public beta, so expect more info to come shortly.

At the end of the day gateway hosting is not the business; it will be pbx hosting. True "telepphony as a service" ;-)

This will take far more time than I have today. I will start with I was born and still live in St. Louis, MO. Even though for a couple years I was never, ever here and always on the road, this is smack in the middle of the US. Everything is just a few hour flight. That part is nice. No beach/ocean/coast isn't the best. But with the travel I make up for it.
