Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player (3rd Generation)

Google just launched the third generation Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player with a new look, some new features and the same price tag as before.  It comes in white and charcoal

Image:Google Chromecast Streaming Media Player (3rd Generation)

What does this new Google Chromecast version bring? In full 1080p you can stream 60fps which in previous versions was only available in 720p.  Google also reports a 15% hardware speed improvement which should help with the new video capability. They also slightly changed the look of the Chromecast but since it sits behind the TV at most houses you never notice.

See It. Stream It.

Comparing the BlackBerry Z10 and Q10 | IdoNotes Episode 139

I chose a quick commentary on comparing the BlackBerry Q10 versus the BlackBerry Z10 to get back into the IdoNotes podcast swing. I ran the BlackBerry devices for about two months each to get a feel for what I liked and did not like. The decision was obvious just a week into using one of them.

The Top 10 PlanetLotus Community posts for 2012 - IdoNotes Episode 132

PlanetLotus.org logo

Working together with Yancy Lent, the founder of PlanetLotus, we compiled the Top 10 posts for 2012 on PlanetLotus. We owe huge thanks to Yancy for taking the time to dig through these statistics.

I had a chance to sit with Karl-Henry Martinsson and Ulrich Klause live and talk about their Top 10 PlanetLotus posts for 2012 and then we discuss IBM Domino 9 and IBM Connect 2013.

The order below is not exact as some of these shifted since the count was so close. This is quite a list and as you can see the majority are around the new launch of IBM Notes and Domino 9 Social Edition.

IdoNotes Episode 128 - IBM Forms Experience Builder demo

I quickly needed an online form to collect data and decided to try out the IBM Forms Experience Builder in Lotus Greenhouse.  After playing around with the capabilities I realized there was no tutorial to make a quick and simple form in under five minutes. Watch the YouTube video above to see it in action.

The IBM Forms Experience Builder is quite powerful and allows simple to complex forms via a drag and drop interface.  You can then share the forms with the public or authenticated users. You can then export the data collected for simple reporting.

IdoNotes Episode 127 - Live at IBM PureSystems Labs

This week I had the opportunity to spend some time at the IBM PureSystem Labs that work with PureFlex and PureApplications. While the PureFlex systems were well defined on the specifications webpage (even after taking 12 clicks to find) the PureApplications systems were not.  I included what single image I could find into the video thanks to an IBM rep that was nearby.

The amount of horsepower in each rack with the interchangeable and expandable chassis slots makes it a great data center in a box approach.  Coupled with the management platform, you are able to spin on resources on demand and even take them away when demand drops.  Check out the video for more.

Webcast Replay for "Collaboration Party of One" with Kathy Brown and jess Stratton

This is the full replay of the webcast from May 23rd with Jess Stratton and Kathy Brown.
When your administrator and your developer are one and the same, and they’re both you, things can get confusing. As the administrator, you’ve got a lot of power. Frequently, the role of administrator is to lock things down, keep the server running smoothly and tune performance. As the developer, you want a lot of power. You want unlimited agents to run anytime you want, as frequently as possible, with little to no limitations! So how do you reconcile these opposing needs when you have to play both roles? Jess and Kathy will show you how to use separate IDs, location documents and other fail-safes to make sure your party of one is successful!

Verbatim 97927 Portable Micro-USB Power Pack Charger review

I had the chance to test yet another portable USB power pack, this one being the Verbatim 97927 Portable Micro-USB Power Pack Charger.  At under $40 on Amazon for the 2200 mHa battery inside, it does hold enough power to support charging an iPhone or any other type device.  It will not charge an iPad and I had some issues with a new BlackBerry.

It comes with a short cable to charge it up, but anything else you need to provide.  I did not like the single LED that they use multiple ways and coloring since you can never tell how much charge is left and they use the same color light for different meanings (red means charging and also that it is running low for example depending on what you are doing).

Watch the video where I show how it compares in size, portability and other variables I walk through.

IdoNotes Episode 124 - IBM PureSystems

IBM has launched a large initiative called PureSystems which offers built-in expertise, integration by design and simplified experience.
Expert integrated systems combine the flexibility of general purpose systems, the elasticity of cloud and the simplicity of an appliance tuned to the workload.

I was able to get access to a demo account, which by all means did not showcase all of the physical capabilities and on demand sclaing.  It was more of a layer inside of the IBM SmartCloud which was disappointing.

I think some of the message about PureSystems is clear, however much of it is very confusing when you get into PureFlex and PureApplications.

Bell + Howell 8553 2.4 GHz Wireless Video Door Intercom System product review

At Spiked Studio we were sent the Bell + Howell 8553 2.4 GHz Wireless Video Door Intercom System for product review. Above is the video and below is the summary.

From the Amazon page:
I was able to be highly disappointed. After seeing the pricing of this unit I am glad it was not a purchase. While the review I provide video goes into great detail I will summarize:

- The quality was cheap plastic for the casing. I did not like the locking mechanism for the battery compartment on the outside unit
- The outside unit came with a scratch on the screen while the inside had protective coating.
- There is no volume controls or battery indicator on the outside unit making it impossible to manage
- The inside unit functioned well and came with a base and charger
- However, the control menu on the base unit had the look of a 20 year old device with outdated technology
- The unit leads you to believe it sends constant streaming video. I was only able to find pictures taken y the camera, fuzzy at best. It also came with 3 pictures loaded on the device (I presume from testing?) of a guy in a shop
- The wireless frequency competes with many home phone systems and wireless access. Be careful as interference did occur in our tests
- The range was not as expected. I know there are tons of variances, but I couldn't get it to full signal in the same room feet apart as the video shows

So I hope that summarized our video for you. We always try and do videos now showing the product, packaging and you can see our reactions

So if you are still intrested in the ~$230.00 equipment you can visit the product page for the Bell + Howell 8553 2.4 GHz Wireless Video Door Intercom System.

IdoNotes Episode 123 - Bunchball founder Rajat Paharia and gamification

I had the pleasure to not only interview Bunchball gamification engine founder Rajat Paharia, but get a behind the scenes look at the user and administrative interfaces.

Bunchball launched a cloud based gamification solution that runs across more products than just IBM Connections including Salesforce and Jive. Nitro for IBM Connections is pretty powerful and competes directly with partner solution Kudos from ISW.

IdoNotes Episode 122 - Lotus Traveler on BlackBerry Playbook via Android

After numerous emails about the best way to load Lotus Traveler on the BlackBerry Playbook and much dispute of what worked, I went ahead and tackled it for you in this video.

I was unable to hit and load the Lotus Traveler server via the Playbook by using the servlet/traveler web interface or going via ActiveSync.  Some of you have emailed and commented  success and a lot depends on versions of servers, policies and more it seems.

So take make it easy for you I created a signed .bar file that you can sideload onto your BlackBerry Playbook if you must have Traveler working and want to use the Android player built into OS 2.0.  It just works!

Here is the signed Lotus Traveler.bar file from Spiked Studio.  This must be sideloaded onto your Playbook while developer mode is enabled (no rooting it is just a switch in preferences). I used DDPBInstaller to do it, you can find that free on the web.

Review: Belkin 4-Way Privacy Screen Protector for Apple iPod Touch 4G

I was able to get my hands on the Belkin 4-Way Privacy Screen Protector for Apple iPod Touch 4G for a review.  I was impressed with the ease of applying the film to the device and how well it worked.

While you could tell it was applied when using the power button it did not interfere with any of the touch features on the device.

The packaging came with a cleaning cloth and credit card like board for smoothing out the film and making sure no bubbles were there.  By rotating the angle of the Apple iPod Touch 4G just a bit you could see how it was blocking viewing of the screen.

This Belkin 4-Way Privacy Screen Protector for Apple iPod Touch 4G gets a thumbs up and will come in handy on flights.  Numerous manufacturers do make other types of device privacy screens for iPhone, Android, ipad and it seems every device.

Get Social Do Business and the IBM Great Mind Challenge

The Great Mind Challenge has been running for years, but has stayed overseas in India since 2004.  This year it came back to the United States to work with a bunch of higher education schools to dig into the IBM plan and new moniker of "Get Social, Do Business" for the 2012 competition.

One of the sponsors of the event is Group Business Solutions (GBS) who had the student projects look at their company. This article from the Spartan Daily (San Jose State University) has some good insight:
According to Daryl Pereira, social media manager at IBM, who has been an integral part in the creation of The Great Mind Challenge in the U.S., the challenge requires students interested in social business to form teams and solve real-world problems for the chance to win prizes and internships.

Gee said there were five winners who got a chance to move on to the next phase of the competition, inching closer to appearing in The Great Mind Challenge 2012.

“The five winners delivered a GBS (Group Business Software) Social Business environment audit study,” Gee said. “The audit provided further insight into GBS environment and ideas how to implement current/new social business techniques.”

So what does all of this mean? The students had to learn about social networking and analytics and bridging business and academics to solve business problems.   We won't see the results for the current program for a while, but the 2011 winners were announced.

Apparently Lotusphere 2012 will have a session on this in the Sponsor Track under SPN208.

IdoNotes Episode 115 - HP Data Vault and the new studio

You can also watch the video in full HD on YouTube.

In this episode I do a an overview and walkthrough the installation of the HP StorageWorks (Data Vault) X310.  The server comes with:
  • 1TB hard drive
  • 2GB of RAM
  • Dual core processor
  • Windows Home Server installed
  • 3 open bays
  • 4 USB ports for external drives
  • 1 external eSATA port

The setup took only a few minutes to walk through and it must be initially performed on a Windows workstation.  It has automatic backup ability of machines on your network, including Mac.

I turned off the automatic backups as I used a Windows VM for the install and then hooked it up as public access on the network to store and stream video and music.  It also has the ability and options to be a iTunes Server.

It has been extremely quiet and performing great over the wired network (no wireless included).  At this point I will start adding more drives and increasing the storage for the studio.

If you are looking to expand your home network, I would look into the HP StorageWorks (Data Vault) X310.

Thanks to Carl for pointing it out and the supplir for getting it sent over.  The links above are Amazon affiliate links.

IBM now grades developers on their coding skills, what about your company?

In a recent article written by Network World, it highlights how IBM has started grading the developers that write the code that drives the products.
Using the Cast platform, IBM managers can analyze how a developer pieces code together, for instance, and make a quantitative determination of the developer's abilities. The system can review the code's performance, security and technical depth -- gauging, for instance, whether the code going to have a lower cost of maintenance in the long term.

"If you're writing something in Java, is the code itself structured in a manner that is compliant with what is recognized as an industry best practice? That's the type of science that Cast helps produce," Howard says.

So with this tool, IBM can now rate and score each developer on the same scale.   Which brings a question to mind.  Is it the amount of code that a developer writes that meets criteria, or awesome code never before seen at a slower pace that is seen as a higher score?  What if a develpoer writes code that doesn't meet industry best practices because it is revolutionary? How is this proven?

Taking the time to identify IBM's top software developers wasn't easy. Nor was it easy to figure out if all of its developers were fully utilized

So somewhere there is now a list of "top" developers.  Does your company have this type of list that everyone can see? I only mention the ability to see it from another comment in the article:

By defining sets of outcomes, or measures, that everyone in IBM's software development community (and its HR reps) could agree on, the Cast system makes it possible to quantify performance. "Essentially it permitted our people to walk around with a scorecard. They could begin to earn points, based on the results or the value they were driving for the business," Howard says.
With IBM's new system, reputation becomes something tangible. "Somebody can enhance their reputation within the community based on results that they're delivering."

So tell me what you think in the comments, Twitter, Google Plus or whatever suits your fancy this week.

Timeflash is a social microcalendar that allows you to publish your upcoming or past events to your social network, while keeping track of your time and interests.

I received a link today for a Cloud Sales Guide for IBM Business Partners.  There is nothing NDA in there or even close, only references and areas to get more information.  I did find one portion I wanted to highlight.  That was the lack of Lotus Software across three of the areas.

IdoNotes Episode 104 - Social Business Jam walkthrough #ls11

You can also watch this video in HD on the IdoNotes YouTube Channel.

IBM launched the Social Business Jam today, in an attempt to get businesses and social media experts to participate for 72 hours in sharing ideas and brainstorming.  I did a screencast of my thoughts as I entered the jam.  I was hoping it was populated with some starters in advance.  But I found it to be quite empty and I was not sure what to do.

While a Help section was there, and I noted it, a splash with simple steps would have made more sense.

You have about 70 hours left to get involved at the IBM Social Business Jam

UPDATE: The Jam I was thinking of at the end of the video was the Innovation Jam in 2006 via their Collaboration Jams
During IBM's 2006 Innovation JamTM - the largest IBM online brainstorming session ever held - IBM brought together more than 150,000 people from 104 countries and 67 companies. As a result, 10 new IBM businesses were launched with seed investment totaling $100 million.

IdoNotes Episode 103 - Gurupalooza at Lotusphere 2011 #ls11

I had the opportunity to again  be part of Gurupalooza.  I have sat on that stage each year since the very first time Rocky Oliver threw it together.  This year Susan Bulloch was the ringmaster, and did an amazing job keeping tens of best practice speakers in order.

If you have missed this session over the years, you get the chance to ask questions of the entire BP speaker track.
You've been basking in the knowledge that has shone down upon you from our tracks of experts all week. You’ve listened to their sessions, “borrowed” their ideas, and have cornered them in the hallways at every opportunity to get that little bit of extra help. But, as always, there are more questions than opportunities for answers. We’re giving you one last chance to pick their brains — and that opportunity is known as GURUpalooza. Bring those final questions, comments, and even a little bit of praise to GURUpalooza and let’s all have one more collaborative "geek fest"before we draw Lotusphere 2011 to a close!

This podcast is brought to you by IdoSphere.  Join in for two days of live web based technical presentations.  Most of the sessions brand new and never seen at the other events.  All recorded and available for playback at your convenience as a registered attendee.

Live blogging: Instant Messaging Market from Radicati

Radicati Group had a webinar this morning on Instant Messaging Market: An Evolving Landscape that piqued my interest.   The panel that was put together included:
  • Jan-Joost (JJ) Rueb - CEO of eBuddy, an awesome aggregator of IM services
  • Eric Young - Sr Director of Field Services at Facetime
  • Dave Kong - Product Manger at Microsoft Lync Server 2010

Sara showed the numerous reports they just released on eDiscovery, email platform for service providers, this one and wireless email market.  She then entered the panel discussion before open Q&A.  Her question in italics and my summary following.

Why is IM still a competitive market?
Microsoft gave the best answer saying IM is part of the broader solution and framework.  Clearly it has value that communication may start with IM and escalate or be solved with the capabilities such as web conferencing.

With more and more solutions forming federation agreements, how is this changing the IM landscape and what you all are doing?
All aggregate or federate a connection in some form,  Outside of Facetime that provides a service around the evolution and merging of enterprise and public networks.  Security is something you want multiple layers.  Some is built into the platforms, the rest is needed to be applied.

Security continues to be a concern for business and consumer users.  How well do you think the current IM security technology is keeping up with IM threats?
People are not advertising the fact they are being hit by malware over IM channels.  Some enterprises cannot tell if it came from the web, IM or even brought in from home technology devices.  In general IM has had more security with things such as presence control.

All speakers agreed secure authentication procedures should be used.  From encrypted wifi networks to SSL.

Will IM move to a bit more mobile technology?
It is a personal way of communication so it makes sense to use your phone.  But the need for advanced capabilities, it is a messaging system and some features will need a computer.

Will IM move to be a simple feature of social networking?
Speakers had some opinions and didn't commit either way.  Each is a unique piece of a social network, so needing a social network to just have IM and presence will not make sense.

Does eBuddy connect with or work with SMS networks?
He can see it happening, but not short term.

Is Microsoft planning support for iOS and Android for Instant Messaging?
Microsoft is looking into different devices right now, but no timeframe .
************************************************************************

My summary

She really didn't dig into anything hard or not presented in their slides.  Quite disappointing with the group she brought together.  I hoped for more content and deeper questions about market and movement.  I wish Lotus Sametime had been part of this as well as it fit right into the conversation numerous times.  I left slightly empty.

***********************************************************************
Sara Radicati did the brief introduction at the very beginning and let each vendor take about five minutes to talk about their product.  Read on that summary below

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 10

We left off finishing the advanced configuration document for the Google Apps Migration tool for Lotus Notes (GAMLN).  Besides establishing security for the database, we move on to the actual site configuration.  A single site document is required before any user migration occurs.  You may have multiple site documents later, but a first one is necessary to even do testing.  Pick a name for the site that makes sense and walk with me through the rest of the General settings.
  • A timezone for the site is required.  This gets interesting if you have a centrally located server that handles users from all over as our customer does.  Your choice is the location of the server, the location of the company headquarters or where most of the staff is.
  • The site administrators are normally the Domino administrators handling the migration.
  • The system can read your Domino Directory for the mail server field and begin registering users assigned to that Domino server into Google.  We chose to do a batch and not use this option.  The default was off. If a user is not found in Google it skips that user during migration.
  • However, we did leave the next section enabled.  The migration tool is to do a check to make sure the user being migrated has already been established as an account in Google before migration begins in the GAMLN tool.
  • You can also provision user accounts in the Google domain if you enable the next section. In order to provision you must enable it to check accounts in the Google domain.
  • Establishing the migration start and cutoff times are important.  You want good communication and testing before you roll this out to an entire server.  We would always allow the users to continue migration even after the cutoff date.  That always make me laugh across systems.  As we would not take a user after a certain date?
  • The number of feeder databases and and maximum users per database are highly important to the performance of the tool balanced with the time it will take to move the users to the Google domain with the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes tool.  We covered some basic scenarios in earlier posts on how to configure the feeders.  Marie Scott chimed in with some excellent knowledge on this as well. The maximum feeder databases allowed are 10. The agent runs at 30 minute intervals, so the size of the mailfiles will matter greatly in order to get each one done in 30 minutes.

We will move through the other site tabs next.

Google releases new version of Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes tool (GAMLN)

Google updated the Apps Migration for Lotus Notes tool to version 2.2.1 (GAMLN) in an announcement on their blog last week.  Some new features were also added of note:
Pre-migration Estimator: It is now possible to gather user statistics prior to migration for selected users.

Error Threshold Setting:
In earlier versions of this tool, if any migration errors were encountered the system would keep the user at Active status until the error was resolved, manually flagged as complete, or the administrator moved the user to "Complete" status. It now allows the administrator to set a site level threshold for errors.

To catch up with the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes series I have in progress, you can read the articles blow in the history of postings on the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) series:

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 9

We left off the Google Apps Migration path from Lotus Notes for the client a while ago entering the Advanced tab information.  Let's quickly walk through some portions and descriptions of these choices.

Image:Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 9
  • The integrity checker at the top runs the agent to verify there is no save conflicts (and replication in a distributed setup).
  • we left the token refresh to 23 hours which is just below the Google time reset of 24 hours.  After reading their comment about possibly locking out accounts that request new tokens too often, we decided to leave it as far out as we can.
  • Humorously, we always strive to keep individual message sizes shrunk down, this forces the issue with a maximum size of 25MB per message, including attachments.  Any message over the Google max is not migrated.  You can reduce this size down to strip larger attachments and force users to place them in other places.  We found this works well to make users filter and use things like Quickr.
  • The length of Google labels frustrated users with tons of nested folders with long titles.  Google strips them down to the maximum of 40 characters no matter what.  So this is a UI issue in need of training.  You can fix this before migration by having users shrink and change folder name lengths.  But, that in itself will most likely never happen for everyone.
  • Additional mail forms is not an issue for this migration but can be for many.  If you have built or installed third party products that added extra mail forms to your user mailfiles, you can migrate them with specific criteria.  So the good news is some of the basic workflow can be moved that is inside the mailfile but not part of the standard Notes template.  The bad news is the lack of the total workflow that can be moved.
  • We did not need to mess or add custom site level settings at all.

As the bottom part says, we had no need to change any of the settings.  It would be nice if they hid those unless you clicked some action to prevent mistakes or accidental typing.

HTC EVO - my phone case of choice is Seidio Innocase

After looking at numerous phone cases for the HTC EVO, I finally decided I wanted both a cover and a holster to carry it around.  The large screen made it bulky no matter what.  An added case made it bigger.  So I did some searching and ran across the Innocase line from Seidio.  It has a snap together cover that leaves the camera, flash, speaker, volume controls and kickstand open.  It raises the back of the back of the phone just enough to protect the camera lens.  Then it snaps into the holster that is covered in a felt for the screen while allowing the clip part to cover the power button to make sure it doesn't get turned on or bumped.

So if you have the EVO and are looking for a case that doubles with a holster, the Seidio Innocase is my choice.

LotusKnows I made you all a landing page, OPML file and search for keeping up

As the blogs light up with a LotusKnows blogging initiative, I wanted to remind you of the resources available for keeping up with the news.
  • If you do not use RSS feedreaders, I created a simple LotusKnows landing page for you in a year ago for LotusKnows and Lotusphere.  The data is being pulled from numerous searches brought together in widgets on the page.
  • If you prefer a newspaper format, the LotusKnows newspaper edition exists as well.  Twitter, blogs, feeds and more.  Did I mention there was a XPages newspaper as well already made?
  • I updated the full OPML file of Lotus blogs to include LotusKnows blog in the listing.  You import this directly into your feed reader of choice.  Hopefully that is Google Reader (my choice with the Feedly overlay) so you can easily share what great news you find.
  • Finding the information you want was never easier with the Google Search for bloggers, Lotus technical information and more.  I shared the Lotus Notes client widget yesterday ort you can always use the search box in the corner of my blog.

  • In order for the global migration to kick off, the status must be enabled.  We decided to leave it disabled until we explored all the settings so we did not have any surprises.
  • The administration server is important as that is where directory registration and maintenance takes place.  As we discussed in an earlier part, we were dedicating a server for this migration task to make sure we did not affect server load as best we could.
  • Google, and myself, recommend you use the Internet Address field to create the user accounts in Google Apps.  Some sites that are larger may have another field they wish to use. But, it pulls this field from the directory in Domino, so make sure it is populated in each person document the way you want their account to be created.  A mistake here will mess up their account in GAMLN.
  • The Google Domain tab is quite simple asking for the new Google domain being utilized and the email address for the Google domain administrator.  You will also enter the password for the administrator account here.  I suggest clicking the verification button before moving on.

In part 9 we will move on to the Advanced tab of the database before saving the form and then enabling the global migration.  DO not forget to catch up to the series below.  I swear this is better than Lost.

GoneGoogle - the Google Apps savings estimator for GAMLN

In the middle of the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) series, I thought you would also take interest in a web application Google has created to try and estimate the savings your company (or school) will save by switching to Google Apps under the name GoneGoogle.  The animated screen asks one simple question, your company size .  From there is has a large amount of assumptions built in while it works it's number magic.

Now one thing I must admit is the awesome way it allows you to share at the end.  From a PDF, spreadsheet or poster, all the data is there.  There is also a bunch of web content around it, even asking you to place your icon on the map when you migrate.  I think this would be a great implementation to spread the news for LotusKnows as well showing wins in Lotus and where they are located.  No names are used, so confidentiality is kept.

One downside is when I attempted to adjust some of the settings to run the tool again.  For some strange reason the tool would not allow me to change the unplanned downtime for Lotus Notes to zero.  We just do not have it between general uptime and clustering.  So if they offer 99.95 themselves, why cannot I enter 100%?

You do get an estimated cost savings dollar amount and hours saved.  You can edit average mailbox sizes, number of people on laptops, group document creation and more. The numbers did not mean much to me at the end, as migration costs and man hours are not included.  However, the idea of providing this type of experience makes smaller companies raise an eyebrow and investigate the solution.

Something to consider in marketing.

HTC EVO first impressions before video review

We talked about the HTC EVO on Episode 26 of TheSocialGeeks this week, but now having actually worked with the device, I am stunned and actually enjoying working with a phone.  The interface is slick.  The application choices immense and the quickness and response impressive.  Even with multiple applications open all the time.  The deal-maker for the day was when I received a quick message to load a specific app.  I did and was able to fully work with our Citrix environment, even launching the Notes 8 Standard client within the phone.

Forget the geek features like 8MB camera, 1.3 MB front facing camera for video chat, HDMI port, multi-app, kickstand, etc etc.  So far the phone is a winner and worth the change.  Oh, and Sprint named us a 4G city and I pick it up here and there as they deploy towers.  HTC has also promised free upgrades to Froyo (Android 2.2) for these phones.

Also,  make sure you keep up with all the product reviews from Spiked Studio on YouTube.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 7

Part 7 covers roles and ACL rights.  Google automatically assumes and enters a Global administrator setup and assigns it the [SiteAdmin] role.  Global administrators handle the administration database and overall management of all site documents.  Make sure you know who you list in this role.

Site administrators get configured each time you create a new site.  They are allowed to see all sites, but only edit their own plus related user profiles for that site.  In our circumstance, there will be no one outside of Domino admins touching this, so no decision had to be made of who gets additional rights.

The documentation also specifies that the administration database for GAMLN get an automatic ACL creation for -Default- set to Manager.  Not the best choice for any environment.  If you will allow users to work in the database and update their own profile during migration, it must be Author with no roles assigned.  We are not allowing users to do this during the Google Apps Migration and will go with the wonderful No Access choice for Lotus Notes.

The administration database assigns most of the roles for you as you place people in power.  So it makes it simple when you are using a select few people to manage the migration.  There is an owner right but that applies to the person being migrated.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 6

As we have moved through the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) tool, I have received excellent input form Marie Scott on their trials and knowledge gained as well.  Now that we have the basic architecture decided, the documentation suggests establishing the migration server as a trusted server in the mail server documents (shown below) and signing the templates from Google with a trusted id source such as the server id file.

Here was a key factor I gleaned from the documentation, mainly since we cluster mailfiles between two data centers for redundancy.  Each time a message is migrated it modifies the Last Modified date.  Doing this to large mailfiles can cause heavy network traffic according to the GAMLN documentation.  They suggest you disable replication for each mailfile as you configure that user for migration.

The last step today will be to create the actual administration database we discussed earlier.  Google provides a gmail.migration.ntf template with the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes tools.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 5

The process of the Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) also has steps to be completed on the Google side, as well as Domino.  Previously we had walked through the Domino beginnings.  Inside of your Google Apps control panel, a simple point and click allowed us to enable the ability to provision the users through the API.

In a previous posting (links below) I talked about the basic architecture, but overlooked the changes needed to the Domino Agent Manger in order for GAMLN to process larger files.  Marie Scott did a good job and posting comments around setting they have used to date, which I recommend reading.  However, the guide suggests to modify the maximum concurrent agents allowed and increasing the maximum execution times.

Another interesting request was that your Domino server have at least two mail.box files enabled.  Hopefully, you all do and understand the benefits of such.  FInally, the conversion of mail from Notes Rich Text to HTML needs to be set on the Server Configuration document for each mail and migration server.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 4

So we left off yesterday running through the admin database and moving into migration options.  One of the key parts of this is the feeder databases where all the Notes mail is converted.  You are allowed to process users one by one or have multiple threads running.  My first fear was that no numbers were given for load based on this conversion.
  •  How would this function on large mailfiles?
  • What if the user mailfile was already over the maximum allowed size on Google?
  • Do we waste time stripping down content from all the mailfiles before the migration?
  • What if they had DAOS enabled?  This is not replication, so how is that handled?
  • Can I grab local archives by moving them to the server and assigning them?

The list went and we soon discovered that in a complex Lotus environment, there is some huge hurdles.  In this smaller migration where users have single mailfiles that are not huge, the issue is not as bad.  Google does suggest placing the migration on a dedicated server for performance needs.  Once again, no numbers, just do it.  So to be safe we are firing up a VM and registering a server in their domain to grant access to start pulling data before moving ahead.

The admin database can be replicated out globally for large scale sites, but the feeder databases will be local to each install location.  I also figured that this dedicated extra server should be in proximity to the mail server being migrated up.  I wouldn't want it pulling hundreds of gigs of mail data across the pipe and then sending that same data again back to Google to build the new mailfile.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 3

The Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes surprisingly comes with a Domino database.  This was happily shocking and surprising as I imagined all sorts of command line stuff.  Now, there are partners that make many tools to migrate, but the customer wanted the built in provided tools, since they are free, of course.

The actual administration database is small, limited views and does the configuration.  Logs and stats are included in the database itself.  Users can be viewed by state (pending, active and complete).  Logs cover such things as mail conversions, migrations and registrations. Make sure you know the Google Apps admin password as it is required in the System Setup.

Image:Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 3

There was a setting I was curious about (I think Marie Scott has the answer) on maximum mail size allowed.  At first we were concerned it was the actual total mail file size itself and not an individual message.  We set the end date for the migration to indefinite as there is no guarantee of completion date and I am not sure why anyone would actually put a hard date in there and then also allow it to continue past end date.  Just don't set an end date.

User selection pulls from the Domino Directory via the familiar directory look-up interface.  We will talk about migration options next.

Google Apps Migration for Lotus Notes (GAMLN) - part 2

Yesterday I concentrated on some of the email migration portions that were of concern as we entered into the migration testing.  Calendaring does have a tool as well and is supposed to support all meetings, reminders, events, recurring and even privacy.  Calendaring will be later and separate.  Today we focus on personal moving contacts and groups

So to move a users personal address book and/or groups we had a couple options to make this happen.
  • Server side - the first thing we noticed is that the user must have synchronized all of their contacts into their mailfile.  Unfortunately, this has either never been done.  Due to it previously being manual, then in a policy that was never set, or worse yet it was done long ago and would totally screw them up if it was done now.  So the server side feature is only one, via an agent that runs, that should be considered if your environment has actively been synchronizing already.
    - The other portion is that users must enter their Google Apps passwords into the GAMLN system itself.  Not something we would have all the users do.  This whole idea of server based it borked it seems.
  • User driven with a Notes form - This form actually gets emailed to users.  So now we expect them to fill this out.  The good news is it pulls their local names.nsf information, no sync necessary and they feel more in control and are able to enter their password directly into the form to upload their contacts.  The user being prompted gives a good feeling but then we rely on users to actually perform this step.  A catch-22.
  • User driven with a web form - This only is needed if the user does not have Lotus Notes for email anymore.  So I am so confused.   It also tries to pull from their web mailfile.  Which means they had to sync before or have entered info now via the web only.  My guess is that this is made directly for iNotes.
Something I did notice is that if the site forces SSL with a self-signed certificate then Google had issues connecting since it couldn't read the cert.  The only answer?  Remove the SSL for the migration of iNotes users.

All this above migrated content is not emailed in any way.  It is all direct upload via SSL to Google so the user must be connected to Google at the time.

Ok, that is enough for today..

How I stopped all comment spam in DominoBlog - Disqus

Back in February 2010, I made the change to turn off the native commenting system inside of DominoBlog.  While it was doing a great job of catching like 9% of everything, it was still dropping hundreds if not thousands of spam comments into the database itself.  So I made a decision to investigate alternatives.

In my other blogs, I was already utilizing Disqus with great success.  I soon realized it also gave me a slew of other benefits that were easily implemented:
  • ability to comment registered (native, Facebook, Twitter, OpenID and more)
  • ability to allow video comments
  • ability to bring in tweets and pingbacks
  • ability to allow such things as video comments
  • ability to have users tweet their comments or share on Facebook brining more traffic back to the posting

You can subscribe to each comment section by email and the trackback URL is listed for each.  Sorting of the comments is allowed by newest, most liked and more.  This gives readers the ability to mark comments that are important, give answers or make good points.

So now I have a central management for all the blogs, no spam and a larger community built around it. You can get scripts, plug-ins for such things as Wordpress and other blog system to make implementaiton a breeze.  Now,  I am hoping for a migration tool to finish moving all past comments into Disqus as well.  They support Wordpress import, so I need to get all past DominoBlog comments intot that format and we am set.

IdoNotes Episode 37 - Susan Bulloch and I talk all about Message Recall in Domino 8, install, configure and stumps!

This was one of the better technical discussions in the podcast series. Susan Bulloch, IBM Technical Enablement Engineer, talk in depth about her recently published article on Developerworks covering the new Message Recall feature in Notes and Domino 8. I managed to stump her a couple times with things of the top of our heads as we crawled through the new feature.

We have a couple answers to the stumps in the podcast. If you disable the user via policy from message recall then the action ability in the mailfile is hidden. The portion on personal veruses public groups is a lot longer answer that Susan will post or link to the reference. The fix for the Standard Notes 8 client is not pretty is my eyes. You be the judge.

Here are the links for this show:

  • Blog posting from Mary Beth Raven in Jun 2007 asking the default on or off quesiton for the feature
  • Blog posting from Nathan Freeman responding to Mary Beth Raven
  • Blog posting from Richard Schwartz points out the finer parts of compliancy and how this doesn't matter
  • Blog posting from DominoBlog.com answering if the features works with DAMO/POP/IMAP
  • Blog posting from Charles Robinson on comparing Domino 8 recall with Outlook 2003, see who wins

I will update more information when I get it. Make sure you check out Susan's blog to catch her at one of the conferences.

IdoNotes Episode 30 - I interview Kathy Mandelstein on the new developerWorks community spaces announcement

Right from the press release comes the interview with Kathy Mandelstein, Director, Worldwide Developer Programs, IBM.  She and I talk for about 17 minutes on the new community spaces and then all things developerWorks and Alphaworks.  I could not let that chance slip by!  There is a new area on Alphaworks wrapped around web services that you need to see!
I also inquire if Sametime awareness will show up someday soon and how all these pieces will integrate together.

Kathy Mandelstein currently manages the worldwide teams responsible for
engaging and communicating to development teams for IBM. The teams support
a community of innovative e-business portals including www.ibm.com
/developerWorks, IBM's resource for developers; www.ibm.com/alphaWorks,
which speeds IBM technology to market and attracts developers' feedback to
IBM's new product development process; and PartnerWorld for Developers,
www.ibm.com,/partnerworld/isv, IBM's Partner program for commercial
software developers interested in building applications that support IBM
technologies.

Kathy and her cross-functional teams consist of marketers, producers,
writers, technical evanglists, and business people reaching out to
developers in cities around the globe. Prior to her current assignment,
Kathy managed Web Development and Marketing teams in IBM Software Group.
She has focused on the developer audience for the last eight years and
began at IBM by leading the Java and e-business campaigns for this
audience. Before joining IBM in 1997, Kathy managed one of the earliest
successful retail Web sites, www.jcpenney.com. Kathy has over 20 years of
professional experience in the areas of advertising, marketing, corporate
communications, sales, management and web development.

A special note: Scott contacted me this morning with 2 important updates.  One, the Domino 7 agent for the RNR services was taken offline on Friday after we talked and it is being replaced today.  If you downloaded the version 4 agent Thursday night or Fri morning last week, get the new one downloaded.  The second was an answer on how the Sametime server will handle invited meetings.  I cover that in the podcast.

NetworkWorld: Microsoft adding more users than IBM in e-mail battle

While there is a glaring line that states that the number of seats accounted for just applications in Notes/Domino are not being counted in here, it is interesting they way they break the sizing down for who has Domino and who has Exchange. Looking at their statements and figures, Domino leads in larger enterprises and the two go head to head in swapping customers in migrations.

Take a read of the article here:
The survey's release comes amid the shipment of Microsoft's Exchange 2007 late last year and IBM's annual Lotusphere conference, which was held last week and focused on Notes/Domino 8, slated to ship mid-year, and new social networking collaboration tools.

The report Gartner put out costs a lovely $995 to read some collection of data I never understand where they actually derive it from.  But if you have a log in, it is over here.

IdoNotes Episode 13 - A podcast interview of Adam Gartenberg surrounding the Sametime Gateway and clearing confusion

Chris Miller interviews Adam Gartenberg, Lotus Offering Manager for Real-time Collaboration. We cover why the recent blog comments/postings exist and confusion over the Sametime Gateway in numerous areas:
  • Why was the gateway not made to natively run on Domino?
  • Why the choice of DB2 over Cloudscape?
  • When will the Sametime server install be simplified and streamlined?
  • Is IBM pursuing an appliance model approach for the gateway?
  • The older Sametime 3.1 AOL integration versus now
  • What can be done to lighten the memory load in the Sametime 7.5 client?
  • Plus a bunch of others I tossed in and talked about myself with him

I apologize for some of the audio overlap, I did not know that was occurring until I was done recording.

Lotus Expeditor announcements in the press

Today made the official announcement of the move by IBM to take some of the .NET market with an open source alternative.
From Marketwire:
"An open alternative to Microsoft® .NET client software, Lotus Expeditor provides the flexibility that comes from service oriented architecture (SOA) and open standards-based software, giving all users a universal client experience and allowing WebSphere Portal, Lotus Forms and Lotus Sametime users to extend their current applications world beyond the desktop," said Ken Bisconti, vice president Lotus Software, IBM.

From Zdnet comes a little piece I liked on offline Sametime models:
Lotus Mobile Connect is software that gives people secure mobile access to Expeditor-based applications. It is designed to let people resume work they were doing with applications while offline, once they reconnect to a network. People who use IBM Lotus Sametime instant messaging, for example, can pick up where they left off without having to log back in.

It is set to be released this year according to the press releases, with no pricing announcement yet.  Pricing for something based on open source.  However taking away other market shares is always a bonus:
While companies that run Microsoft's database and client software will likely remain "Microsoft shops," Lotus Expeditor product manager Angus McIntyre said others may want to adopt IBM's software. He said it lets developers migrate from Visual Basic programming to Java, as well as tie into the upcoming Lotus Mobile Connect software.
