We are proud to announce registration is alive for IamLUG.  Please feel free to go ahead and register as space is limited.  We will be sending approvals as fast as we can tomorrow, so make sure you check spam filters also.  The site has tons of information being added on the location, amenities in the area and just general info.

DO NOT
book your hotel until you are confirmed so you can get the discount code and rate if you are staying in the all suite hotel that is hosting the event.

IWedecided to pre-announce to give everyone an equal shot in registration so no one gets left out.  You will have to register to submit to speak or to be a sponsor so we make sure we have room to accommodate everyone.  Look for more news tomorrow as the hotel is ready and the venue exciting.

I blogged back in January about my first days with the Blackberry Storm.  I was frustrated and still learning.  It had issues.  It boggled me sometimes.  But here is what is different.
  • We upgraded the OS on the Storm from the crappy Verizon version of .74 to a wonderful .109 (do not get .113 yet as it screwed us up)
  • I updated all the applications that came with it or that I installed.  A tremendous difference
  • Crashes virtually went away outside of one where I run the camera off and on too much and I get a reboot.  But they are rare and I live with it
  • The small screen protector film was not noticeable at first until it peeled on a corner.  I thought the screen was broke.  Easy fix, they sell them in packs and protect the screen well.  Just clean it very well before applying a new one
  • I tend to work in landscape mode most of the time.  I like the QWERTY keyboard and got used to it now.  Some apps only work in portrait so I am prepared to swivel as required
  • I do not like the phone dialer.  I was used to just typing a name or number and it would guess.  I now have to go into the phone app, then the contact tab to find someone
  • Screen scrolling is great since the new OS, so no more complaints there
  • I installed a little free app that locks the touch screen when on calls automatically.  You just slide your finger to unlock and access the menus.  It saves you from accidentally hitting some button on the screen with your face
  • There is slight hesitations sometimes when typing, mainly after long use and no restarts.  No big deal.  They are not often enough to be of concern.
  • I like the type ahead guessing (T9 basically) or words and I find it very accurate most of the time
  • I had to get used to where they put some symbols between the numbers icon and sym icon
  • I am finding using the camera to send to Flickr and twitpics quite easy.  It really makes sharing easier
  • More applications are being made for the Storm, increasing the productivity

Just overall I am liking it much more and finding it useful and easy to work with.  This was all after the OS upgrades and application patches.  So do not run away, be prepared to do some work to get it right for now.

Look for postings, pictures on Flickr and even some live streaming (of what will be allowed) this week.  Best to do one of two things.  Follow me on Twitter, or watch for the #Admin2009 hashtag on Twitter for all related postings.  Paul Mooney will be doing some Cover-it-Live stuff I heard, even after flying through Cairo, Auckland and Tulsa to get here.

Otherwise the entire presenting crew has arrived safely and is accounted for.  Most of them either seen, sent tweets or talked to someone.

I have talked about this here and here.  Now IBM brings this site to the forefront for partners and then I get yet another email for yet this site (screenshot below) all in one day:

Image:IBM is insisting we socially divide

Why is there not one Lotus Connections install that combines all of this together?  I have not even included Greenhouse and Paxos into the mix.  For IBM to push itself as a social networking platform on Connections, it needs to have one social networking site that brings together all of these into one global community with one global login.  I cannot make it any simpler than that.  I cannot run more than one Activities in my sidebar, I cannot keep putting Dogear bookmarklets into my browser and there is only one place I blog.  Help me!

We are excited to announce IamLUG, a user group conference for the Americas.  Here are the specifics first and some commentary below.
When:  It will be held August 3-4, 2009
Where: St  Louis, MO
Hotel and location: We are finalizing the deal on the hotel/venue for Wednesday this week.  But we are putting you in the middle of everything
Attendee Registration: We will be opening registration later this week
Sponsorship: Send an email here for info.  We have levels of sponsorship available with benefits to each
Extras: We put this against the weekend to offer the ability for families to take a last summer vacation with tons to do here.  More on that below.
What will be different Not only will you find some of the top speakers, but we want to make sure that speakers from user groups get the chance to stand up and speak

With the growth of UKLUG, ILUG and more, We noticed we have never had the same type of event here.  So last year (October 2008 to be exact), the site was registered and the planning begun.  With the whirlwind around Lotusphere, we patiently waited to get it off the ground.

Why did we choose St Louis?
  • Centralized location to the US, Canada and well, everything lower is on their own :-)
  • Local community support for the organizers
  • Family friendly beyond belief.  We have a top Zoo here (free for most all of); a top Science Center near the Zoo (for free); home baseball games the weekend before the event; Six Flags Over Mid America; Grant's Farm; brewery tours (yes the home of AB for you beer drinkers); Botanical Gardens and so much more.  IBM Partnerworld was a success here a short time ago.
  • The location for the event will have restaurants, hotels, bars and even casinos (for a huge hint) all within walking distance.  The ballpark is within walking too.
  • The list goes on, the site will have all the info shortly on what can be found for that weekend...

Ok, I can't say much more right now.  Look for tons of info the coming weeks about IamLUG.org from me and other organizers as we make this the best event possible

The following image appeared on a client that was recently upgraded, uninstalled and reinstalled.  All worked well previously so we knew this was odd.  (see image below)

Image:Hi, I am Notes and I have no association

Now then, this is NOT a Lotus Notes error.  It is operating system related.  We went in and found that the .nsf file types were not associated properly.  Once that was taken care of the error came back.  So thanks to some good searching, we found a blog post from Ray Davies (hey Ray and thanks for making this quick) that addressed this very issue with excellent screen shots and a step by step tutorial.

I wonder if a Technote might be in order?

This will take far more time than I have today. I will start with I was born and still live in St. Louis, MO. Even though for a couple years I was never, ever here and always on the road, this is smack in the middle of the US. Everything is just a few hour flight. That part is nice. No beach/ocean/coast isn't the best. But with the travel I make up for it.

Don't Panic

Looking to find me in person? Here is where I am and will be.
